Why does Easter matter to Christians?

Using a trail, the children will have the opportunity to hear about the events of the first holy week. They will hear about the special Easter services and events that happen at the Cathedral and explore some of the ideas and beliefs linked to Easter through creative activities.

Activities include creating an Easter Card, making a book about the Easter Story.

Why does Christmas matter to Christians?

Based on the suggestions from the Gloucestershire Agreed Syllabus, this visit will take you on a trail around the Cathedral exploring the nativity story from the Gospel of Luke in different stations. There will also be an opportunity to find out about Advent traditions in the Cathedral as well as related craft activities.

This trail enables children to make clear connections between Bible texts studied and what Christians believe about God: for example through how cathedrals are designed. through different workshops during the session, this trail will enable children to:

  • learn about the medieval Christians who built cathedrals ‘to the glory of God’. Find out about what kind of God cathedrals suggest the builders had in mind

  • Investigate how different parts of cathedrals express ideas about God as holy and loving

Anglo Saxons

Through role-play this tour will give children a better understanding of Anglo-Saxon daily life for a wide variety of local people. In costume we will visit the Cathedral Crypt, which was built by Anglo Saxon Builders, St Oswald’s Priory, which is the burial place of Alfred the Great’s daughter and learn about the importance of women within the Cathedral’s history. This is an interactive tour that can accommodate a maximum of 35 pupils per session.

Mosque and Cathedral

Spend the morning at the Masjid E-Noor and then head to the Cathedral for lunch and afternoon activities.

At the Mosque you will have an introduction to Islam, a guided tour of the Mosque and activities. At the Cathedral you will have a multi-sensory tour of the Cathedral as a place of worship. There are a variety of Syllabus options for the Cathedral afternoon, please let us know which you would like us to concentrate on.

The Cathedral Education Department will coordinate and book both venues.

Pilgrimage

Pupils will adopt the roles of various medieval pilgrims, wearing appropriate costumes and carrying pilgrim-gifts to leave at the tomb of King Edward II.

Understand the pilgrim's hope and the significance of a special journey. Find out about medieval pilgrimage, Gloucester's position as a pilgrimage site, and pilgrimage today.

Activities include making clay masons' marks, printing a pilgrim badge and playing pilgrim games.

On booking a tour, teachers will receive character lists and further preparatory information.

Glorious Gloucester

This tour will take your students on a journey of the Cathedral from 1089 to today. Find out about the King who was crowned here and the king who is buried here. Learn about the lives of people who lived in the Cathedral and those who travelled a long way to visit it. Discover why a Cathedral is a Cathedral and what makes Gloucester Cathedral such a special one.

Monastic Trail

Pupils will be given a role to play and will dress as a novice monk. Through the trail they will discover Gloucester's Benedictine heritage. During the tour you will follow the ‘Abbot’ back through time to find out about the monastic way of life, exploring the cloisters, learning about how they studied, worked and prayed.

Activities include writing with quill pens, illumination and identifying and using herbs.

Tudor Trail

Children will dress as a monk and in role-play, discover Henry VIII's plans for St Peter's Abbey, how this effected the lives of Monks all over the country and how an event in 1327 saved the Abbey in . During the tour of the Cloister they will attend a Chapter Meeting, sing in Latin in the Quire and experience life in Tudor times.

Activities include writing with quill pens, herb smelling - discovering 'tussie mussies' and illumination.
